Dealer Notes
The 2026 Ford Explorer Active immediately stands out as the smart choice among midsize SUVs like the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander, thanks to its advanced 4WD system, turbocharged EcoBoost engine, and standard third-row seating. With 20/27 city/highway MPG and a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Explorer excels in versatility, efficiency, and modern tech, putting it ahead in day-to-day practicality and all-weather confidence.
Shoppers comparing multiple three-row SUVs will find this model especially compelling if they need flexible space, strong year-round traction, and up-to-date infotainment. The Explorer is ideal for families or active drivers who want a balanced mix of comfort, connectivity, and proven EcoBoost performance, without sacrificing the rugged capability required for Midwest winters or adventure travel.
Performance-wise, the Explorer delivers a 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 paired with a 10-speed automatic for brisk acceleration and refined highway cruising. While some competitors offer naturally aspirated V6 engines, this SUVâs turbo powertrain supplies superior low-end torque and responsive passing. The standard 4WD system gives it an edge on snow and gravel, while independent suspension ensures a composed ride whether loaded with passengers or cargo.
Safety is a top priority, with standard features like ABS, electronic stability control, traction control, and multiple airbagsâ"including knee and overhead units. Unlike some rivals that reserve advanced systems for higher trims, the Explorer includes rear parking camera, emergency communication (911 Assist), and auto high-beam headlights right out of the box, combining active assistance with robust passive protection.
Inside, the SUV packs modern essentials such as Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a 12-speaker audio system, navigation, and tri-zone climate control. Third-row seating expands passenger capacity, while heated mirrors, split folding rear seats, and a power driver seat boost daily convenience. The 100A Equipment Group ties these features together for a seamless ownership experience, whether commuting or road-tripping.
Comparing the Explorer to the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander, it leads with turbocharged efficiency, standard third-row access, and a more advanced drivetrain at this trim level. Both competitors offer reliability, but the Explorerâs EcoBoost engine and standard connectivity features position it as the high-value, tech-forward option for buyers seeking a future-ready family vehicle.
Buyers often ask: Why choose the Explorer over the Highlander or Pilot? This SUVâs turbo engine outpaces most segment rivals in both power and efficiency, while standard 4WD isnât always included elsewhere. What unique features does it offer? Standard navigation, a 12-speaker system, and advanced safety tech. Which delivers the best value? The Explorer blends proven reliability, high resale, and advanced features as standardâ"making it the smart pick.

By Bruce Potter | on Monday, February 27, 2023
Transmission broke at 17000 took 3 months to get parts for rebuild, defrost strips coming off rear glass, replaced , fix rear camera twice, cracked catalytic converter left side, be nice car if I could keep it out of shop. So warranty has covered everything. Fun to drive, impressed with performance.… - 1.0
Another hacked together vehicle at a high cost
By AGlover | on Tuesday, July 05, 2022
Started with paneling popping off at Less than 5k miles, then the window became stuck in the down position, 2 hours at the dealer from them to just get it back up and tell us the post won’t be in for awhile, now the radio isn’t working. Every mechanical malfunction came with Parts that were scorching hot to the touch when trying to troubleshoot. It’s at 11500 miles, owned since March and have regretted it since.… - 4.0
3rd Explorer and still happy
By NoHo | on Wednesday, September 08, 2021
This is my third Explorer and I still love it. I drive about 25,000 a year with a heavy foot and typically drive my cars to the ground. In 4 months I’ve owned it, I already put 12,000 miles and fortunately zero issues, it’s swerving capabilities are still good, I enjoy the assisted driving, the sound from the speakers are clean and clear. It’s actually pretty quiet.…
