Notes from the dealer
Pragmatic buyers who prioritize reliability, everyday versatility, and long-term durability will find the Explorer XLT particularly attractive. It answers the needs of families and individuals who require three-row seating, ample cargo flexibility, and advanced convenience features. With second-row bucket seats and a split-bench third row, it accommodates both passengers and gear with ease, ensuring the SUV remains practical as family needs evolve.
This SUVâs 3.5L V6 Ti-VCT engine is part of Fordâs long-standing, proven powertrain family, recognized for routinely exceeding 150,000 miles with proper maintenance. Paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with Select-Shift, it balances smooth driving with robust towing capability, especially with the included Class III Trailer Tow Package. Owners can expect consistent performance in both daily driving and demanding conditions, contributing to lower long-term service costs.
Safety is a cornerstone of the Explorerâs value proposition, with advanced features such as Electronic Stability Control, ABS, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and multiple airbags, including knee and side-impact protection. The Ford Safe & Smart Package adds active systems, including emergency communication (911 Assist), helping safeguard both occupants and investment for years by reducing accident risk and potential repair costs.
Equipped with the Technology Feature Bundle and XLT Appearance Package, the Explorer offers SYNC 3 infotainment, power-adjustable front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Comfort and Driver Connect Packages deliver multi-zone climate control and driver conveniences, while the Trailer Tow Package enhances weekend and utility capability. SiriusXM radio and 12 premium speakers provide an enjoyable in-cabin experience, adding to long-term satisfaction.
In ownership cost comparisons, this SUV holds an edge over rivals like the Chevrolet Traverse and Honda Pilot. Its established reliability record and high resale value help offset depreciation more effectively than many competitors. Maintenance intervals are straightforward, and the Explorerâs parts and service availability further contribute to affordable long-term ownership economics.
Routine maintenance is simplified, with oil changes typically required every 7,500 miles under normal driving, while the recommended service schedule helps ensure engine longevity. The EPA estimates fuel economy at 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, balancing performance with efficiency for a vehicle of its size. Fordâs reliability reputation is well supported by industry awards, and the original warranty included comprehensive coverage for 3 years/36,000 miles and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, providing peace of mind for initial owners and used buyers alike.

Come on ford
by Lydia on Tuesday, September 22, 2020
My biggest complaint is how hard it is to set up bluetooth devices. There isn't just 1 button. Theres a series of 4 buttons you need to get working prior to driving to hopefully get bluetooth. Just such a headache that the suv lost major points in my book for that. The headrests are those awful ones that push your head forward so they kill my neck on long drives. The fold down seats can hold a lot of weight which has been nice. However, the backs of the seats are a thin particle board that will break under enough weight. Here I was worried that the bar that holds the seats would break first. - 5.0
Built for those of tall stature
by Dave on Wednesday, February 03, 2021
Im 6'9, having owned full size trucks from the big 3, these gen5 Explorers are unequivocally the best fitting for my size. However, high window sills are a bit high for most shorter folks Ive talked to. In 100k miles, Ive only replaced rear brakes and front struts and only the right one had failed at that. Rear brakes are just about due. Best car Ive ever owned. - 5.0
Love for Mable
by Humnbrd23 on Saturday, May 29, 2021
Everything I could want in a vehicle. Mable (her name) has yet to fail. Drivability is excelent. Long trips are no issue in the comfort of Mable. There is room for everyone and thier luggage. She has double moon roofs to watch the stars at night or feel the sunshine in the morning. Mable also has towing capacity, but I have never needed it. Thank you to the couple that traded her in with only 64000 miles.
